Bag was God Street Wine’s first full length independent album. Recording on a small budget including support from family and friends, and with the help of engineer Joe Rogers, GSW booked the House of Music in West Orange, New Jersey – the same studio where Meatloaf’s Bat Out of Hell and Kool & The Gang’s Celebration were recorded. There they laid down the most popular tracks from their early touring repertoire, including “Nightingale,” “Goodnight Gretchen,” “Waiting for the Tide,” and “Hellfire.” The album was soon picked up by independent distributor Ripe’n’Ready and sold almost as well as the band’s later major label releases. The cover art by Rob Sinclair aka Squibb features the iconic “Bag Guy”, a recurring character in early GSW posters and postcards.
Formed in 1988 by Lo Faber, Aaron Maxwell, Dan Pifer, Jon Bevo, and Tom Osander, God Street Wine played a prominent role in the early jam band scene alongside fellow New Yorkers Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors. Veterans of the HORDE Tour as well as runs with The Allman Brothers, Bruce Hornsby and The Black Crowes, they also released 5 albums and performed more than 1,000 shows across the United States in their first decade together. Since splitting up in 1999, the band has reunited for numerous shows and released new recordings over the years, including the full length album This Fine Town in 2019. God Street Wine is excited to finally release 3 albums from their catalog on vinyl!
