Description

Today, interdisciplinary artist and performer Kilo Kish (Kish Robinson) releases her critically acclaimed sophomore album AMERICAN GURL, featuring Vince Staples, Miguel, Jean Dawson and Jesse Boykins III. The album is an infectious slice of psychedelic art-pop supported by industrial beats that speaks to outrunning perceptions of identity, status, and race.

The album includes singles “NEW TRICKS: ART, AESTHETICS AND MONEY” ft. Vince Staples and “NO APOLOGY!” and is accompanied by a series of mixed media film works, with one for each track, designed by Kish who is an acclaimed visual artist with prior film screenings at The Getty Center, The Hammer Museum, the Museum of Image and the iconic Los Angeles gallery HVW8.

On AMERICAN GURL, Kish says, “This whole upcoming project is about power or choice and escaping notions and identities imposed on you that are not yours to claim. For me it was ultimately freeing to admit that I don’t know how to carry those identities or if I even wanted to anymore. To just strip myself completely.”

This second pressing with Diggers Factory will be the only pressing of AMERICAN GURL in transparent red.

EARLY CRITICAL PRAISE FOR AMERICAN GURL:

"Maximalist pop production of the ’80s" - Billboard
"Raps in an icy staccato over ground-shaking industrial drums and piercing sirens." - THE FADER
“..is less anthemic — it’s more a trance-like spell, conjured to convince you of the promise of starting anew.” - New York Times on “Death Fantasy”
"Renewed and self-assured." - Pitchfork
“Kilo Kish is just excellent at writing hooks, infusing each track with dance-pop elements that contain enough quirks to serve the subject matter.” - Paste
‘Insane, playful” - The Needle Drop
"Glitchy popera" - NYLON
"Lets loose chanted rhymes over a wobbling electronic beat." - Consequence
"A maximalist art pop song with glitchy synths" - Brooklyn Vegan
“It’s been fascinating to watch electro-pop artist Kilo Kish shift and change over the last decade,” - Paste
