"The Cross-Out" is the debut release of Ziegfeld, a musician/composer from Los Angeles. It is what Ziegfeld describes as a Third Life Event; a departure from the new wave/post-punk of Paris Working and the alt-psych of the Martian Lamps - this third evolution of the artist advances a larger, deeper musicality than was previously explored. Hints of Bowie and Walker are noted but the lyricism and vocal style are imminently his own.
The tracks are co-written and co-produced by Steve Kirk who is also the primary instrumentalist on the sessions. Kirk is a well-regarded guitarist and composer who has written and performed scores for the Club Foot Orchestra as well as for multiple video game soundtracks (Voodoo Vince, Thimbleweed Park and Bartlow's Dread Machine).
Assisted by Malcolm Mooney (of German band CAN) offering a spoken word stanza to the title song and drums by Ryan Brown (of Dweezil Zappa's band) the musicianship is solid and is hopefully a promise of much more music to come.
