Description

TABOU1 is proud to present the first ever vinyl release of X Uhuru, the first and only album reuniting Michael Rose and Sly & Robbie after the golden years of the legendary Black Uhuru formation in 1978-84.

Recorded in the early 90’s, X Uhuru not only showcases the timeless brilliance of Reggae music but elevates it with a modern twist, blending traditional roots with innovative sounds that resonate across generations.

Rather than trying to recreate the old Black Uhuru sound, Sly & Robbie crafted a groundbreaking sound for the legendary Grammy-winning vocalist Michael Rose.

X Uhuru is a journey through a kaleidoscope of emotions and rhythms in which Michael Rose brings his signature vocals and thought-provoking lyrics, seamlessly weaving stories of freedom, resilience, and unity while Sly & Robbie’s production delivers the polished and unique TAXI sound that makes this album a must-have for music enthusiasts. Tracks like "Come Home" feature some subtle double-time echo effects that would make any second-string junglist turn green with envy.

Michael Rose made roots reggae history as a founding member of Black Uhuru, a groundbreaking harmony trio whose dark, modal melodies and dread worldview carved out a unique niche in the reggae marketplace during the 1970s and 1980s. This 1999 effort stands with the best of his work. The rhythms, combine the sci-fi punch of the best computer ragga with the deep grooves of old-school roots Reggae, and Michael Rose's trademark North African ululations and piercing tenor voice cut through the mix perfectly. Highly recommended.
