Information

Description

Trumpeter Chet Baker was unknown when he made his first recordings with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, but he was an immediate hit with the critics and the public. First, he won the New Star category in Downbeat's Critics' Poll; then he struck out on his own, exercising his highly personal singing style on My Funny Valentine to start an explosive "Chet Baker Craze";. He may have had the face of an angel, but there was another, darker side to Chet: narcotics, beatings, prison and long periods without work were commonplace until fate smiled on him again in the early Seventies.

Chet Baker Sings, issued in 1956, an essential album of jazz history, revealed not only Chet’s exceptional voice but also the quality of his music. Anthony Minghella used My Funny Valentine in his Film The Talented Mr Ripley and the album received the Grammy Hall Of Fame Award in 2001. In the prowess of his early career, Chet first revealed the simplicity and restrained emotion that were inherent in the style of this great trumpeter and singer.
