First, he won the New Star category in Downbeat's Critics' Poll; then he struck out on his own, exercising his highly personal singing style on My Funny Valentine to start an explosive "Chet Baker Craze";. He may have had the face of an angel, but there was another, darker side to Chet: narcotics, beatings, prison and long periods without work were commonplace until fate smiled on him again in the early Seventies.
