Findlay Napier - Outsider

The process of this new album started with me making a list of all my unrecorded songs and searching for common themes. At that point there were forty five songs, most of them complete, sitting in the voice memos on my phone or on the hard drive of my computer. Over two or three evenings I listened and compiled an inventory of what I’d been writing. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t recorded “Who Cares?” yet. I found a couple that I pray never see the light of day, not so much works in progress as a chimp with a typewriter, guitar and a rhyming dictionary. Many new songs came from the 'I Heart Songwriting Club'. I’d met (virtually) the club’s founder Francesca de Valence while taking part in Global Music Match 2021 and had signed up. To date, the club has helped me write thirty-three original songs, including “Silver Service” and “Running the Light”, that appear on this album. As I worked down the themes column, this Outsider project began to take shape. Then the songs fell into two categories: Outsider in Love and Outsider in Life.
