When we hear such immersive music, our first instinct is always to take a few steps back in an attempt to better comprehend the intriguing world Negra Branca opens up with this album.
Searching for references, one is bound to travel across various musical genres, that encompass (to name just a few) the beats of Hype Williams, the psychedelism of Magical power mako or Alice Coltrane’s dazzling spiritual Jazz. But it doesn’t stop here: Ambient soundscapes and tribal beats dwelling in a dichotomy of music filaments strangely elegant and persistently detached, cleverly escaping any sort of labelling. Hailing from the UK collective GNOD (A contemporary version of the German band “Embryo” with an ever rotating list of musicians) Marlene Ribeiro, aka Negra Branca, never ceases to amaze us, working in layers of hypnotic beats and enticing tribal & ethnic elements.
Highly recommended for fans of Coil, Yong Yong, Musci & Venosta, Ash ra Tempel, Deuter, LA Vampires, FKA Twigs, Paco Sala.
