Average Sex were formed in the autumn of 2016 when Parisian singer Laetitia Bocquet met British songwriter Sam OʼDonovan at a gig at The Victoria in Dalston, East London.
Sam had been playing drums and touring with the band Beds In Parks earlier that year and during some down time started writing songs with Laetitia in her kitchen. By spring 2017 they released their first single ‘Weʼre Doneʼ a limited press on pink cassette via indie pop label Crocodile Records, the track received support from BBC radio 6 music and John Kennedyʼs Xposure on Radio X and they were soon on the radar of The
Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess who asked them to play at the “Different Days” album launch show in London. After seeing them live he wanted Average Sex on his label O Genesis Recordings, December that year saw the release of their debut 4 track E.P “Ice Cream” to coincide with a 14 date tour supporting the Charlatans around the UK with two European dates in Paris and Amsterdam at the beginning of 2018.
After getting back off tour Tim invited the band up to Big Mushroom studios near Manchester to work with himself and producer/mix engineer James Spencer (New Order, Johnny Marr,
The Cribs) to record the bandʼs follow up EP ‘Melodieʼ which received tremendous support from Chris Hawkins (BBC 6 music) and John Kennedy (Radio X) and after a string of festivals dates over the summer the year ended with a sold out show at The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch.
2019 was a busy year which saw Average Sex complete two successful UK tours and the labelʼs idea of an EP trilogy was complete by summer when the band recorded 3 songs which would become their most successful release.
Erotomania is the first compilation which reunite all of their EP, available in France, exclusively out on Le Maquis. And a real success for the french record store day, now available for export. The album had a lot of audience in the UK.
Started in 1998 by Philippe Pierre-Adolphe, Le Maquis quickly became one of the few independant french labels very creative on the international scene. In fifteen years, Le Maquis produced more than 200 albums alternating cult artists, new emerging and talented bands and thematic compilations originals and unreleased. On the catalog, we find artists as important and diverse as Alan Vega, James Chance, Lydia Lunch/Big Sexy Noise, Dee Nasty, The Neon Judgement, Trisomie 21, Hifiklub, Jake Ziah, Delaney Blue, Metropolitan Jazz Affair and anthologies such as Cocktail Molotov (imaginary soundtrack of May 68), Berlin 61-89 Wall of sound (Thirty years of German rock and electronic music), Free Africa (50 years of independant African music) and Cannabissimo (Electro and rap music under influence). 2020 Le Maquis Act II.
After a short period of recovery, the mythical label is making his come-back and publishes three albums on the row, one of them is from the English band Average Sex, the new sensation of British indie rock. Musical resistance goes on…
