Manufacturing is expensive, artists aren’t sure they will be able to sell all copies they paid to press and, moreover, with the current distribution system, it’s mandatory to press at least 300 copies to have a chance to be profitable. For all these reasons, pressing a record is often sought to be a risky operation by artists, productors and labels. And many just abandon the idea. In the same spirit, labels are sometimes unwilling to press reeditions, scared that they will not sell it all and they will end up loosing money. As of today, there is no tool allowing them to forecast demand for a specific record and overstock is seen as a real plague by many of them.
