Lady Day est née Eleanora Fagan. Combien faut-il de souffrance pour exprimer l’amour, la douleur, le désespoir ou la vie ? Peu de chanteuses ont transmis l’émotion comme Billie Holiday. Un père guitariste de jazz qui ne reconnait pas sa fille, plus intéressé par la vie nocturne que par la vie de famille, une mère femme de ménage, cuisinière et prostituée occasionnelle, qui laisse sa fille entre tantes et maisons de redressement,une vie de violence, de viol et d’abus de toute sorte. Entre prostitution, prison, et quelques prestations dans les bouges où la générosité de la clientèle est le seul espoir de rémunération, Billie décroche un enregistrement à 18 ans chez Columbia. C’est le début d’une reconnaissance, qui à travers les années ne se dément pas. Peu de voix ces quatre-vingts dernières années ont été capables d’émouvoir les cœurs comme Billie Holiday a su les émouvoir.
