Arya Zappa - Dark Windows

Arya Zappa until now has lived on just one of those planes of existence. She exists to understand her internal horizon of transcendence, she creates to share her results. With this project, her conscious and subconscious can finally come together.

“Dark Windows” - recorded over the last few years - is the culmination of a period of intense introspection. Singing with a voice she has only just found, Zappa sings into the corners of her understanding, testing the limits of her knowledge of her Self.

We can hear an artist breaking and then reconstructing their identity one layer of noise at a time. In the resulting music, a Cronenberg-Esque body horror effect is felt, the sound of the body and mind separating and confusing the body into a spasm. With the voice taking center stage Zappa becomes a narrator of dystopian post-war cityscapes, bending under the pressure of progress like a Larkin poem told by Fellini.

Accompanying the album is an eponymous 3 part single series and short film that further expands on the psycho-journalistic approach Zappa’s masterfully music tackles. Each act is a music video exposing their identity, thread by thread until we’re left with the truth. Within the dance of their internal and external lives, the past and future recollections and projections is the answer to who Arya Zappa really is.

As we witness her cross the threshold into our physical world ask yourself how sure of yourself you really are. In times like these nobody can be sure but it can be fun finding out.
