IAM is a French rap group, originally from Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône. Formed in 1989, it is composed of Akhenaton (Philippe Fragione), Shurik'n (Geoffroy Mussard), Kheops (Éric Mazel), Imhotep (Pascal Perez), Kephren (François Mendy) and Freeman (Malek Brahimi).
The group publishes its first studio album, ... of the planet Mars in 1991, which enjoys a certain echo and sees IAM being broadcast in the media (radio, TV ...) including several appearances on the French program RapLine The group had composed a few months earlier the generic). The group publishes its second album Ombre is light, in 1993, which allows it to increase a little more its popularity. It follows a third opus, The School of the Micro Money, published in 1997, which wins two awards to the Victoires de la Musique and is certified gold record.
IAM returns in 2003 with the release of his fourth album, Revoir une printemps, whose reception is mixed. Season 5, the fifth album of the band, is published in April 2007. The sixth studio album, Arts Martians, is published in April 2013. It follows the same year of the album ... IAM.
IAM is often considered [by whom?] As one of the pillars of French rap and as one of the best bands in its history.
